My History….

My interest in counselling is the result of a incident that happened while I was at work earlier this year.

In February 2011 one of my colleagues at work mentioned that I looked like and had the same mannerisms as her ex-husband. She was a new employee in the office and she said that she purposely avoided me because I reminded her of him.

She mentioned to me that I was so like her ex that we could be brothers.

I had put the question about my birth mother and family to the back of my mind for so long that this incident brought the whole ‘ who am I ’ question into focus for the first time in 40 years.

I decided to order a copy of my original birth certificate giving details of my original name and birth parents.

When I received the certificate the feeling of relief that I hoped for was instead replaced with a feeling of confusion.

My work has an agreement with a company called Right Core Care to provide help to employees with personal issues. I contacted them and they gave me support and arranged for me to be contacted by a counsellor whom I could visit.

My counselling sessions went much deeper than my adoption issues; it helped to explain how I felt about myself and how I interacted with others.

Joining this introduction course is a direct result of what happened to me, issues that my counsellor helped me with now made sense. I was able to put to one side my feelings and accept who I was.

I have not yet made the decision if being a counsellor is for me. This introduction course I hope will help me make that decision and give me the additional work skills that will help get back into employment.
